Worship God, not Emotions – Quote of the Week – Gerald May

“Teresa and John both say that we easily become so attached to feelings of and about God that we equate them with God. We forget that these sensations are only speaking to us of the divine One. They are only messengers. Instead, we take them for the whole of God’s self, and thus we wind up worshiping our own feelings. This is perhaps the most common idolatry of the spiritual life.”

Interesting thought to roll around in my mind today. I want to be sure I'm worshiping God.

Shine on!

I have always said this and I will say it until I die, emotions will lie to you and they are only there for a brief moment, one can not worship or accept Jesus as savior out of their emotions, because emotions is not enough to hold or keep a person. great post

Oh, wow. Worshiping our own feelings, now that's a danger/sin I hadn't thought about.

Gerald May wrote some powerful words. I too used to say emotions were liars but now have learned to hold them more gently in my hands. They are a gift from God but have learned not to base my faith on them.

I think this quote does make us stop and think though and a good one to ponder....
